  12.           Early this morning flight controllers completed the
  13. first 
  14.   
  15. major in-flight checkout of America's Viking 1 lander,
  16. scheduled to 
  17.   
  18. touch down on Mars in early July next year. 
  19.   
  20.           They report that the automated lander with its life
  21. search 
  22.   
  23. and other scientific instruments is in excellent condition. 
  24.   
  25.           Thorough engineering checks were made of the
  26. craft's nuclear 
  27.   
  28. power, propulsion, guidance, attitude control, computer, tape
  29. recorder, 
  30.   
  31. telemetry, heat control, and radar landing systems. 
  32.   
  33.            Four of the lander's scientific instruments,
  34. including its 
  35.   
  36. 2 cameras which will photograph the Mars surface, were also
  37. checked out. 
  38.   
  39.            The second Viking lander, scheduled to touch down
  40. on Mars in 
  41.   
  42. early September next year, will receive a similar test next
  43. week. 
  44.   
  45.            Viking 1 is now about 17 million miles from the
  46. Earth and the 
  47.   
  48. distance to Viking 2 is now 13 l/3 million miles.
